HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

LOCAL OBSERVATIONS

ART FEATURE

5th December 2025

With formal training as a fine artist, Stephen McDonnell’s collection of artworks depicting Perth’s coastal dune topography and natural salt lake ecosystems, rediscovers elements that may be hidden in plain sight within our local geography.

Exhibited at Unifor’s Perth showroom and created using graphite, watercolour and gouache, Stephen’s approach is influenced by the Japanese concept of MA by using negative or white space, not only to emphasise the intense WA light, but also to try and pause time.
